SkyX Serious Compatibility w/ Ramona Technology GOII (go-to) system

Software Bisque,

I am looking at purchasing SkyX Serious but need information on compatibility with my two mounts. Both are old technology but in excellent condition. I'm not sure SkyX is compatible.

Mount #1,

Losmandy G-11 using digital setting circles, JMI encoders with a Celestron Advanced Astro Master. Non-Go-To. Push to only. From what I have read SkyX is compatible but please confirm.

Mount #2,

Celestron CI-700 with a Ramona Technology GOII (go-to) system.

In the 2001 Ramona instruction manual, it states the system is compatible with "The Sky" but of course that was 2001. Any info on compatibility would be much appreciated.

Info from Ramona manual.

Reservations about Sky purchase

I have a Windows 7 Desktop PC.

The Sky was recommended by someone I trust.  Your website info convinced me that this is very likely the astronomy software I will purchase.  Here's the obstacle:  I want to purchase your software NOW for my desktop PC to learn its operation, and I will need to reinstall it later when I get a laptop for the field.  I understand this is possible to do.

However,  I haven't decided whether I want to bother relearning MS-Windows because I'll be forced to upgrade to Windows 10, or use this opportunity to switch to a MAC.  It isn't an arbitrary decision.  There are other software products I would have to purchase, too, and need time to decide which choice I should make.  (Besides, I'm hoping Mrs. Claus will fill my stocking with the laptop, so I'll need to wait, anyway.)

Q. - If I buy now for Windows, but later decide on the MAC, will I be allowed to switch over, or will I have to buy another license for the Macintosh?  Assuming I only need one license, could I retain a Windows version on my PC Desktop and use a Mac version on my laptop?

Paramount mounts in cold weathers

Hi there, I am evaluation options to upgrade my eq mount and the Paramount MYT is in my radar. In this case, I'd appreciate if somebody could provide comments/feedback about the performance of this mount in cold weather (for example 5degF or -15C). I live in Alberta, Canada where the best sky conditions are found in winter season. Any particular precaution that should be taken to ensure the correct operation/performance of the mount?

Low/medium end mounts are typically lubricated with thick greases which get very sticky when ambient temperatures drop below 32F (0C). This add additional stress to the motors and make the balance operation almost impossible.

Many thanks, Diego

Lack of telescope control option in The Sky for iOS

I downloaded The Sky for iOS thinking I could use The Sky and a wi-fi interface to initiate go-to commands, as well as providing sky data, from my iPad.  The Sky for iOS is, to me, very user-friendly and I like the idea of a tablet rather that a laptop for this purpose.  My mount is a Losmandy G-11 with the latest Gemini 2 controller, purchased within the past two months.  Not being able to get my mount, a SkyFi wi-fi interface, and The Sky to work I contacted customer support and found The Sky for iOS only supports Bisque's rather expensive Paramount mounts for this kind of setup.  This is a major, major disappointment.  Fortunately, there is a solution in that instead of using The Sky for iOS I can download Simulation Curriculum's SkySafari 4 Plus for $15 and, using their SkyFi, be in business.  Hopefully Bisque will add telescope control to your otherwise excellent product.

Dome Controller Software

We recently update our software to the TheSkyX Professional Edition for Windows (Box+Download). Previously we had SkyX installed on a older outdated windows machine. This was purchased in 2014. We are now realizing we need to dome controller software as well. Can you tell me what my options are at this point?

All-Bisque observatory automation

Even after spending time on the website, I'm not sure of the answer to the following.

With all ASCOM-compatible components (TCSGalil from DFM, SmartDome from ACE, FLI camera and filter wheel, ...) is there an all-Software-Bisque soolution that gives a high level of automation, similar to that of ACP. This means both remote (realtime from another location) and scheduled robotic (launch a script before dinner, look at your images in the morning) operation, with safety features. What SB SW would be needed to do this?

BACKING UP THESKYX'S SETTINGS

ISSUE

Your personalized settings for TheSkyX can become altered or lost through undesired configuration changes, file corruption or media failure. To protect against this, we recommend that your settings be backed up regularly. From such a backup, one can restore former settings when desired, or even configure a different computer with identical settings.

These settings include preferences, toolbar and window configurations, .SKYX documents, observing notes, custom horizons, imaging system definitions, field-of-view indicators, TPoint data and models, and more.

    RESOLUTION

Use the following procedure to make a backup of TheSkyX Application Support Files (ASF) folder—note that this is a description of the folder, not its name!...follow the link for details. You can simply make a duplicate copy in the same location, but for better safekeeping, a copy should be saved to a different storage device (e.g. a second internal or network drive, removable USB flash drive, or a writable CD or DVD).

    1. Mac: Use Finder to open the Library/Application Support/Software Bisque folder.
Windows 10: Use File Explorer to open the Documents\Software Bisque folder.
Windows (pre-10): Use Windows Explorer to open the My Documents\Software Bisque folder.
    2. Right-click on the ASF folder (whose name begins with "TheSkyX", followed by your chosen edition).
    3. From the pop-up menu, choose Copy; it's normal that nothing appears to happen.
    4. Navigate to your intended backup location, such as a folder on another drive.
    5. Right-click on the destination drive or folder.
    6. From the pop-up menu, choose Paste to write a copy of the ASF folder to this location.

    Tips

    • You may optionally change the backed-up folder name, such as by adding the date, to help identify the particular backup.
    • You might wish to use a special backup application to schedule the automatic backing-up of your ASF folder on a regular basis.
    • Advanced users may want to invoke the read-only attribute for certain files in their working ASF folder to ensure that their content is not accidentally overwritten.
See the related article on Restoring TheSkyX's Settings.

      RESTORING THESKYX'S SETTINGS

      ISSUE

At times you may wish to restore TheSkyX's personalized settings to their defaults, a previously backed-up state, or duplicate your settings on another computer. (For help with backing up your settings, see Backing Up TheSkyX's Settings.)

These settings include preferences, toolbar and window configurations, .SKYX documents, observing notes, custom horizons, imaging system definitions, field-of-view indicators, TPoint data and models, and more.

        RESOLUTION

This discussion refers extensively to TheSkyX Application Support Files (ASF) folder. Note that this is a description of the folder, not its name!...follow the link for details.

If you wish to restore TheSkyX to factory-default settings, you can simply rename or delete your current ASF folder. The next time TheSkyX is launched it will create a default ASF folder, requiring entry of your name and serial number.

The following procedure may be used to restore a backup of your settings. It assumes that your destination computer already has an ASF folder in place. If TheSkyX has never been run on that computer, we recommend that you first install and launch it (even if you cancel the serial number and license agreement), which will create a default ASF folder.

        1. Mac: Use Finder to open the drive and folder containing the backed-up ASF folder*.
Windows 10: Use File Explorer to open the folder containing the backed-up ASF folder*.
Windows (pre-10): Use Windows Explorer to open the folder containing the backed-up ASF folder*.
*Don't open the ASF folder itself.
        2. Right-click on the backed-up ASF folder.
        3. From the pop-up menu, choose Copy; it's normal that nothing appears to happen.
        4. Mac: Navigate to your Library/Application Support folder.
Windows 10: Navigate to your Documents folder.
Windows (pre-10): Navigate to your My Documents folder.
        5. Locate and right-click on (don't open) the Software Bisque folder. If this isn't present, read the paragraph before step 1.
        6. From the pop-up menu, choose Paste to write a copy of the backed-up ASF folder to the Software Bisque folder. (If you're asked if you wish to overwrite the current folder by the same name, you may do so, or use a different name for the folder being pasted.)
        7. Open the Software Bisque folder and, if it isn't already, rename the just-pasted ASF folder as follows (according to the edition):*
              TheSkyX First Light Edition
              TheSkyX Student Edition
              TheSkyX Serious Astronomer Edition
              TheSkyX Professional Edition
*If a folder other than the one you just pasted already has this name, you'll need to rename that folder first, such as by adding the word "backup" to its name.
        8. Launch TheSkyX and the restored settings, including name and serial number, should now be present.

        Tips

        • If TheSkyX asks for your name and serial number, verify that you placed the backed-up ASF folder in the correct location (step 4) and that it is named correctly (step 7). If the ASF folder was supplied by another user, they may have removed their name and serial number(s).
        • If TheSkyX gives an error message about read-only (Windows) or locked (Mac) files, it may be that the ASF folder and/or its files have been given the read-only or locked property by the backup-and-restore procedure. In this case, you should remove this property (see this WikiHow.com article, "How to Change File Properties").

        Hi

Around the first of the year (2017), I will be in a position to purchase a Paramount MX+ mount.  I live close to your offices and would like to drop by to discuss the mount and accessories I will need for installation on my observatory pier.  Do I need an appointment or would a drop in visit be OK.

        Thanks

        Hello,

I have installed The Sky X Serious Astronomer on my macbook pro as a mac version. On this macbook there is also windows 7 installed in a bootcamp partition. Most of the astro-software I use is in the windows partition and therefore I want to move The Sky there.

Is it possible to deinstall The Sky mac and download and reinstall The Sky Windows?

I want to renew the subscription. If moving is possible, is it better to renew before or after moving?

As a result of re-downloading/installing TheSkyX Pro, updating to 10.2.0 and daily build is now at 6269, So I'm starting from scratch? When I select Automadome under Dome Control the message is: A necessary driver was not found Error = 217.    Opening Automadome directly it's all there as normal.    What's needed to satisfy the Error = 217 ?

        Hi,

I have a license of TheSky Professional V. 10.1.11 build 5080 (sn. D031-XXXXXXXX) and a license of Camera addon (sn. 502D-XXXXXXXX) running on a Paramount Mx (sn. 5059-XXXXXXXX).

I see that I can connect any ccd camara apart from the SBIG cameras. When I try to connect my QHY9 through ASCOM it seems the software it does not recognize the ASCOM driver for this camera.

Can I update for free to a more recent softwares supporting the most common types of CCD cameras? I include here TheSkyX professional and the camera addon.

        Regards,

        Trackpad scrolling or zooming

I use TheSkyX Pro on a Mac with a trackpad which I use for scrolling or zooming.

Zooming : It is not smooth and the image jumps very unpleasantly

Scrolling : Suppose I opened the Preferences dialog and I  scroll through it with two fingers on the trackpad. Everything works fine until the mouse pointer get over an editable field. Then the scrolling stops and instead the editable field is incremented although I did not click on it ! And there is no undo to get back to the original value.

This sounds like cosmetics but this should not happen with a software like TheSkyX.

Could you please fix that ? Thank you.

        Hello,

I am currently using a Planewave CDK 17" mounted on a Mathis equatorial fork mount MI 500/750 with SiTech Servo 2 controller. My current mount does not have mount homing or high resolution Renishaw encoders. My observatory is installed in the South of France, but I live in Belgium.

I have decided to buy a new mount, and I am considering the Taurus 400 with optional on axis encoders.

        Could you tell me:

        1) The full configuration I would need

        2) The total price and delivery time for this

        3) A very preliminary and crude idea of the delivery costs to Belgium or France

        Friendly regards

        Yves Jongen
